This tutorial for DIY Matching Father and Son Ties will walk you through each step to easily make matching tie and bow sets so your kiddos can match dad on this special day!
DIY Matching Father and Son Ties
Each year, my favorite Father’s Day gift to give my husband is a tie that ties and bows for the kids. It is one of our favorite Father’s Day traditions because look how cute they all are in their coordinating outfits!
With that said, buying matching tie sets and coordinating hair bows can be tricky and expensive. So I set out to find a way to make my own.
How do you make matching father and son ties?
I figured out that when I shop for my husband’s tie, I can purchase an extra to make a clip-on tie for my son AND a hair bow for my daughter, and I can use any ties from any store. This makes the hunt for matching ties and hair bows in a variety of sizes so much easier and less expensive!
You only need a few supplies to convert an extra tie into a kids’ size clip on tie and/or hair bow, and it is super easy and quick!

Watch the video, or read the steps below!
How to make a clip-on tie
Step 1: Tie the necktie as you would traditionally, adjusting the length to fit your child.
Step 2: Cut the neck portion from the tie with scissors, leaving 1 inch of fabric on each side of the tied knot.
Step 3: Apply hot glue to the front of the clip and press it into the center of the knot.
Step 4: Open the tie clip and apply hot glue to the back of the clip. Fold one of the 1-inch tabs of fabric over the glue, avoiding covering the rubber stopper at the bottom of the clip. Flatten the fabric as much as possible so that it does not hinder the clip from latching properly.
Step 5: Repeat the process with the other tab of fabric. Close the clip-on fixture.
How to make a bow
Step 1: Tie the remaining cut portion of the necktie into a bow.
Step 2: Trim the tails and seal the ends with hot glue or stitching.
Step 3: Use hot glue to attach the bow to an alligator clip.
