When you think of tie-dye it’s likely that the image of an iconic hippie-esque swirl t-shirt comes to mind first, created with lots of bright colors. However, one of the funnest parts about creating with tie dye are the infinite possibilities for patterns outside of the swirl! Just twist this way or fold that way and you can create a wealth of amazing designs to make whatever you are dyeing one-of-a-kind!
One of our favorites we have tried lately involves a bit of pinching, twisting and tying with string to create patches of negative space that result in a super fun sunburst pattern all over the fabric! We tried this method on tie dye tote bags and love the contrast of the white sunbursts against the vibrant colors of the dye. Here is how to make your own:

How to make DIY Sunburst Tie Dye Tote Bags
Step 1: Pinch some of the tote bag canvas between your fingers and twist it into a point.
Step 2: Beginning at the base of the point, wrap string tightly around the point, covering the point completely.
Step 3: Cut the string and tie a tight knot to secure.
Step 4: Repeat the process of wrapping points of the canvas with yarn string until the desired amount of points is achieved. (Each point will create a blossom of negative space on the bag.)
Step 5: Prepare the dye in the bucket according to package directions.
Step 6: While wearing gloves, completely submerge the tote bag in the dye. Let the bag soak according to package directions or until you have reached the desired shade.
Step 7: Rinse the bag to remove excess dye.
Step 8: Using scissors, cut the pieces of string to and remove. Hang the bag to dry.
That’s it! This method is such a fun way to incorporate a different take on the typical tie dye patterns, helping to brighten up your closet, home decor or accessories!
