Easy Hand-Painted Taper Candles For Fall
Painting taper candles is so easy—all you need is brushes, paint, and inspiration! Since I don’t consider myself to be a strong painter or artist, before I start painting mine, I scour Pinterest for patterns or color combinations that I like. I find that having a design plan with simple shapes leads to less trial and error and more overall success! Plus, taper candles are so affordable that I will often buy a couple of extras in case something goes terribly awry.
What kind of paint to paint taper candles?
Our go-to paint is almost always FolkArt Multi-Surface Craft Paint. It comes in every color you can imagine, it’s accessible and affordable, and the coverage is exceptional. Where other paints take multiple coats to cover a project, we can usually get away with just 1-2 when we use this paint. We’ve painted other candles with this paint and it holds up beautifully.
Will paint stick to wax candles?
Yes! The right paint will stick to candles beautifully. We painted some candles in the spring with FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint and the designs are still as gorgeous as the day we painted them! We’ve also found that if you mess up with this paint you can let it dry completely and gently scrap it off the candles and start again! However, once it is dry, as long as you handle the candles gently the paint will stick to the candles and not move a muscle.

How do you make hand-painted taper candles?
Step 1. If you don’t consider yourself a natural artist (I don’t), it can be helpful to spend some time gathering some inspo images to help guide your designs. Simple flowers and basic shapes are a great place to start if you are a beginner!
Step 2. Paint your candles and let them dry completely between coats. (I found it helpful to put the candles in holders for painting/drying.)
Step 3. Display and enjoy!
Just imagine the possibilities for making custom taper candles for every season and holiday! I already have some spooky ideas for Halloween and can’t wait to get started! What would you paint on yours?
