DIY Resin Pens with Shaker Top
We’ve made a lot of resin crafts–from rings to home decor to hair accesories–but this one might have been the most surprising! You really can make magicial, functioning pens using epoxy resin! We basically blew our kids minds on the first week of school when we whipped these up and their schoolwork has never been so sparkly!
Just like any resin project the key is using the right kind of mold and having patience. I was worried that the resin would seep into the tip of the pen and it wouldn’t be able to write, but with the right supplies this wasn’t a problem at all.
How much resin do I need to make a pen?
Pen molds do not use much resin since they are slim. Plus, they have the ink tube and any add-ins taking up space. We like using Mod Podge resin because it is easy to use and super accessible, and we found that we were able to make around 12 pens with the 8 oz kit.
What supplies do I need to make epoxy pens?
Making resin pens requires fairly minimal supplies. You’ll need tools to mix the resin like disposable cups and a popsicle stick, molds and resin (plus any safety tools you require such as gloves, a disposable table cloth, etc.), and any add-ins such as dye, glitter, clay shapes, etc. The great part is that they can be made to fit your exact style. You can even make them completely clear and add in nothing!
The molds we used were extra exciting because they had a shaker element at the top where you could add in extra glitter and shapes that will move when the pen is used. So fun!
Supplies Needed to Make Pens with Resin
- Pen molds
- Resin
- Add-Ins such as crushed glass, glitter, clay shapes
- Super glue (if you are using the molds we used with the shaker tops)
- Disposable cups for mixing/pouring
- Popsicle sticks or disposable spoons for mixing
- Gloves
How Do You Make Resin Pens?
Watch us make the pens on Instagram Reels!
Step 1. Begin by preparing your working surface. I will typically lay down a disposable tablecloth in my most ventilated room, gather my cups and tools for stirring, and make sure I have a timer for mixing the resin.
Step 2. Prepare your pen molds by securing the ink tubes inside them and arranging any mix-ins.
Step 3. Measure, pour, and mix the resin and hardener according to package directions. For ours this meant a 1:1 ratio, mixing consistently for three minutes. Mix gently to minimize bubbles.
Step 4. Carefully pour a minimal stream of resin into the pen molds. We found that it was helpful to do this in layers, filling a bit of the molds, giving it time to settle, them continuing to fill them. During this process you can also add in any extra embelishments within the layers.
Step 5. Fill molds according to the designated fill line and let set for 24 hours or according to package directions.
Step 6. Once the resin is completely set, remove pens from the molds. They should be strong and hard by this point so it shouldn’t damage them to remove them from the molds.
Step 7. Fill the shaker tops with your desired baubles. Apply a thin coat of super glue around the edge and attach included cover. Let dry before using.
I now want to make pens for every holiday, season, and event–it’s so fun and with the variety of elements you can add or takeaway the possibilities for designs are endless!
