You know how obsessed we are with ice dye around here, and after testing it on everything from sweatshirts to napkins, we’ve found that the results are extra effective on a thinner cotton fabric. So, when we came across some fluttery white dresses (for moms + little ladies!!!), we knew they would be the perfect canvas for our ice dye dreams to come true. Then, we turned to one of our favorite tie dye brands, Tulip Color, to bring the idea to life since we know how beautifully vibrant (and easy to use) their dyes are!
If you’ve never done ice dye before, the swirly result is achieved by covering the fabric with a pile of ice and then shaking dye powder on top. Then, as the ice melts the dye mixes with the water it drips down onto the fabric creating some gorgeous organic swirls. Tulip Color is a perfect candidate for this project because the dye comes in bottles as a powder and then you add water to the bottles and shake it up. However, you can just skip that step and just shake the powder right over the dye to achieve this magical method! Here is what you’ll need to do it:

How to make Mommy & Me Ice Dyed Dresses
Step 1: Mix soda ash according to package directions, and soak your dresses for 20 minutes.
Step 2: Ring out the dresses and scrunch them up on a wire rack over a large container. Top the dresses with ice.
Step 3: Sprinkle the dye powder over the ice, covering it completely with dye.
Step 4: Let the ice melt completely. You can use a blow dryer or a sunny spot to speed up the process.
Step 5: Once the ice has melted, put each dress in a Two-Minute Tie Dye Container and microwave according to package directions. This sets the dye in just a few minutes, as opposed to letting it set overnight.
Step 7: Rinse the dresses until the water runs clear. Wash the dresses by themselves in the washer and hang to dry.
