Christmas break has officially begun at our house and that means lots of hot chocolate and lots of little hands to keep busy. If you are in the same (very noisy and chaotic) boat as we are, today’s post is for you! This toothpick DIY marshmallow snowflakes craft/treat is a fun way to take your hot chocolate game to the next level, and it’s a great way to get your kids away from screens and get to making with their hands! Plus, it only requires two supplies — marshmallows and toothpicks!
When I set out everything for my kids to make these snowflakes they had so much fun putting them together. Then, when the snowflakes were finished, they kept building with the remaining supplies, making everything from houses to snowmen! This project is a simple and fun way to unlock their creativity (and it didn’t hurt that they could eat half of the supplies, too).
Here is what you need to get started:

How to Make DIY Marshmallow Snowflakes
Step 1. To make these marshmallow snowflakes, begin with a large marshmallow for the center, then stick a toothpick into the marshmallow.
Step 2. Slide 2-3 mini marshmallows onto the toothpick.
Step 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have added arms to the snowflake, all the way around the large marshmallow (we did about 7 arms on each.)
Step 4. If desired, use scissors or a knife to cut a slit in the large marshmallow (this will allow the snowflake to sit on the edge of the mug.) Then, place the snowflake on the edge of your mug!
That’s it! Your hot chocolate has never been more fun! Now tell us, what are your favorite ways to dress up a cup of cocoa? We’d love to hear them!
If you are looking for a few more ways to keep your kiddos busy once they are done building we marshmallows, we’ve got a couple more ideas to help save your sanity! These pop up holiday cards are the perfect way for kids to spend an afternoon and will bring adorable Christmas cheer to family and friends. Or, these snow globes made with model magic clay are a total blast, and we have a whole class you can turn on to guide their every step!
Happy holiday making!
