You know we love a balloon garland here at the PLG and are obsessed with the way they can easily (and affordably) make an impact at any event. Well, today we have taken that affection and shrunk it down just a bit to make this mini balloon cake topper — because as much as we love a big balloon installation, there’s nothing that can’t be made cuter by making it mini!
We love this cake topper project because it makes a big impact with few supplies, skills or money! Just look at the way it takes a small, plain, white cake and makes it pop! You’re gonna love make this one. Here is what you’ll need:
Supplies needed to make a Balloon Cake Topper
Small balloons (under 7 inches)
Wooden skewers
Craft wire
Wire cutters or scissors
Glue dots
How to make a Balloon Cake Topper
Step 1: Blow up your balloons part of the way, in various small sizes.
Step 2: Using wire cutters or scissors, cut a length of wire that is as wide as you’d like your balloon garland to be plus an inch on each side.
Step 3: Attach the balloons to the wire by tying the neck of the balloons to the middle of the wire. Play around with clustering different sizes and colors together and with how they are arranged once they are attached until you like the formation you are creating.
Step 4: Once you have attached all of your balloons, use glue dots to attach the balloons to each other to fill in open spaces, and keep the balloons where you’d like them.
Step 5: Wrap one end of the wire tightly around the top of a skewer several times until secure. Use wire cutters or scissors to remove excess wire. Repeat with other skewer.
Step 6. To give the garland a horizontal appearance, use wire cutters or scissors to make oen of the skewers shorter than the other by cutting off an inch or two of the length.
Step 7. Stick in cake and celebrate!
Isn’t it so much fun? We love that you can play around with the colors of the balloons to match any party color scheme and make the cake come to life!
Happy Making!
