Is there anything better than dressing up kiddos for Halloween? I mean, until they are old enough to speak up for themselves, you can truly let your wildest costume dreams come to life on adorable little people. It’s the best. And with today’s costume, I have done just that, making an EASY and adorable Halloween costume for my kids that makes me so happy I can hardly stand it. It also makes me hungry. We’re making a hot dog costume with a ketchup and mustard sidekick (also the perfect funny family Halloween costumes)!
This costume is so simple make, and the real star is that we used Rit Dye to make it happen. To create your hot dog pals you’ll need some sweatsuits in relatively specific colors and by using Rit it makes it so easy to get just the right shade to make the costume perfect every time. Rit has a wide range of colors to choose from, and formulas for a variety of fabrics so you can make any costume you dream up come to life in vibrant color. Let’s make some YUMMY costumes!
Supplies needed to make these Funny Family Halloween Costumes
For the Hot Dog:
Tan Rit Dye
White Cotton Sweatshirt with a Hood
White Cotton Sweatpants
White Tennis Shoes
Brown Faux Suede (or other brown fabric that won’t fray)
Yellow Felt
Red Felt
Red Glitter
Yellow Glitter
Mod Podge Fabric Medium + Brush
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun + Sticks
Polyfill
For the Ketchup + Mustard:
Red Rit Dye
Yellow Rit Dye
2 White Cotton Crew Neck Sweatshirts
2 White Cotton Sweatpants
2 Pairs of White Tennis Shoes
Silver Heat Transfer Vinyl
Red Heat Transfer Vinyl
2 Metal Pie Tins
2 Paper Mache Cones
Red Spray Paint
Yellow Spray Paint
Hot Glue Gun + Sticks
Craft Cutter or Scissors (We use a Silhouette Cameo)
Hole Punch
String
Dye the Sweatsuits and Shoes
Step 1: (Note: If you have never dyed with Rit Dye before, we suggest starting here before dyeing.) Prepare Rit Dye in a stainless steel sink or bucket according to package directions. Put on gloves
Step 2: Dye all of the sweatsuits and shoes in a dye bath of their own color (ie: dye the hooded sweatshirt and pants and shoes in a tan dye bath, a crew neck and pants and shoes in a different red dye bath, etc.) If desired, remove laces from shoes before dyeing to keep them white. Dye for as long as the package suggests or until you have reached your desired shade.
Step 3: Rinse clothes with cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 4: Wash clothes in washer/dryer, according to Rit Dye package directions. (Find their reccs here.)
Make the Hot Dog Costume
Step 1: Cut the brown fabric into a hot dog shape (length/width will depend on how tall/wide your child is and how large you would like the hot dog to be).
Step 2: Cut a hole at one end of the hot dog for the face, leaving about an inch around the hole.
Step 3. Attach the hot dog piece to the sweatsuit at the face hole using hot glue by glueing around the outer rim of the hood and attaching the hot dog to it at the face hole. Only attach with glue around the hood and not at the neck.
Step 4: Cut some wavy ketchup and mustard lines out of red and yellow felt (length will depend on how long your hot dog is).
Step 5: Once cut, apply a layer of Mod Podge Fabric Medium to the ketchup and mustard lines, using a paint brush. Sprinkle glitter onto the Mod Podge. Let dry completely.
Step 6: Attach ketchup and mustard lines to the hot dog fabric using hot glue.
Step 7: Stuff sleeves with polyfill to give volume and look like the bun.
Make the Ketchup and Mustard Costumes
Step 1: Using a craft cutter, cut the words “ketchup” and “mustard” out of silver and red vinyl. If you do not have a craft cutter you can do this with scissors, or purchase iron-on letters.
Step 2: Iron-on the vinyl design on its corresponding sweatshirt.
Step 3: Flip over the pie tin so the bottom is facing up. Attach the paper mache cone to its center using hot glue.
Step 4: Spray several coats of spray paint on the hats to cover. (Red on one, yellow on the other.)
Step 5: Punch holes on either end of the hat to attach string. This will help to keep the hats on their heads!
That’s it! Now you’ve got a couple of costumes that look good enough to eat! Plus, they are the comfiest Halloween costumes out there. My kids never want to take them off!
