It’s been in the 80’s off and on here in NYC and I’m not going to complain about it. However, today when I got up and the weather was rainy and cool I was FEELING it because it is mid-October after all, and we want to get cozy! So, as a result of these fresh fall feels, I’m going to share my new favorite fall DIY project. This oversized fall wall art was so fun to make because it is an upcycle project which means it is super affordable and you might already have most of the supplies you need around the house!
I made this by painting the surface of a big, old corkboard that was collecting dust, giving it new life! Then, I used the AWESOME new wood grain specialty adhesive vinyl from Silhouette and cut it out with my Silhouette CAMEO 3 to give it some fun texture. Using the combination of the upcycled corkboard and the wood grain vinyl gives it little bit of a rustic farmhouse feel, but keeping it simple also keeps it modern so it can fit in with any kind of decor.
Here is how you make it:
Supplies Needed:
Corkboard (mine is 18″ x 24″)
Silhouette Adhesive Wood Vinyl
Silhouette Transfer Tape
Silhouette CAMEO 3
Acrylic Craft Paint + Brush
1. Paint your corkboard! I gave mine two coats of an off-white acrylic paint. I also decided to paint the frame the same color because it was a pretty unfortunate shade of yellow. Let dry completely.
2. Load your vinyl and cut your design using your Silhouette CAMEO 3. My design is a portion of the most beautiful Pablo Neruda poem called “If You Forget Me,” that will break your HEART (if you’d like my exact cut file, feel free to email us at hello@prettylifegirls.com and I will send it over!). I love the mention of autumn without it hitting you over the head that this is a piece of fall art.
3. Once your design is cut, peel back the excess vinyl. This wood vinyl is so cool because it has the feel of wood texture without the density of wood. However, it is a little thicker than normal vinyl so be sure to peel with care!
4. Once you have peeled away your excess, place transfer tape over the design and rub with pressure. This step is key for this project because you want the layout of the letters to stay put and transfer tape makes it so easy. Then, peel back your design and transfer it to your corkboard by rubbing over the letters with pressure and carefully peeling back the transfer tape.
5. And, for a little extra fall fun and added visual interest, you can find these fun leaves in the Silhouette Design Store and make a coordinating fall garland. I made mine with some extra vinyl I had laying around, hung it on the corner of the art, and BAM, more fall cuteness!
Isn’t it lovely? And it’s SO easy and affordable to make your own. Oversized art is so fun to have around but it can be so pricey, so, by using a corkboard instead of having to have something big framed, you are saving $$$ that can be put to better things. Like a big pumpkin pie to eat while you admire your hard work. Seems like a big win, if you ask me.
Happy fall crafting!
