I must admit that the learning curve involved when going from rural to city living has been a steep one for me. As a lover of a big closet full of clothes and an even bigger pantry full of essentials, it has been a major adjustment to learn to live in a nearly closet-less, completely pantry-less space here in Manhattan. I hate the feeling of having your stuff dictate your life, and when you live in a small space it can feel that way sometimes. As a result, I have been working to find ways to not only simplify our lives and free them from so much stuff, but to better organize what we do have. So, today I thought I’d share three of my favorite tips I have picked up lately while adjusting to urban living.
1. Use your walls!
I have been completely saved by finding sleek shelving, cool hanging storage baskets, and cute hooks to hang all over the walls that can double as decor and storage. We have everything from hats to kitchen utensils to backpacks and books hanging on our walls and it saves so much space in our home!
2. Check your emotions when it comes time to purge!
For me, I find myself getting emotional sometimes when it’s time to get rid of things. However, I’ve found that if I take the time to discern why certain things have emotion tied to them and recognize that it isn’t the physical object that matters (it’s just stuff after all!), but the feelings I’m feeling, then I can let it go easier and work to be intentional about channeling that emotion to something that matters more than some physical object I am carrying around. This practice makes my home feel so much more peaceful because it helps me live more minimally and free of clutter.
3. Use Crate Space!

Cratespace.com helps you live minimally and prevent over-shopping, with a curated selection of name-brand essentials (everything from baby supplies, to skin care, to paper products and more!) in everyday sizes that don’t take up too much space which is essential for our tiny place. And, Crate Space is so perfect for city dwellers since I have no extra storage space, and don’t want to waste time shopping for basic household items (and have to shlep them all over the city with two kids in tow). It’s a game changer!

Thanks so much, Lindsay! It is actually a La-Z-boy couch! We will be doing a feature on it in a couple of weeks so keep an eye out!
