DIY Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging + Free Template

I have been wanting a little Valentine’s decoration for my house, and this Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging turned out perfectly. Now, before we get into this, you should know that I have never embroidered anything in my life. So you don’t need any expertise to do something like this. It was simple (and can I say therapeutic?), and if I can do it, anyone can. So here’s how I did it.

How can I make my own embroidery designs?

The beauty of embroidery is that you can use pretty much any graphic or design that you find or make yourself as a template. We used the design below – just click and print for your own use!

How do you embroider by hand for beginners?

As I mentioned, I am by no means an expert with hand embroidery, and if I can do it, so can you! I referred to this website for stitching ideas and tips. It was super helpful!

Supplies needed to make a DIY Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging

• Linen fabric
• Embroidery hoop
• Embroidery floss
  Embroidery needle
• Wooden dowels
  Bakers twine/cotton

Steps for making a DIY Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging

Step 1: Prepare fabric

Draw or trace your design with pencil on your fabric. Secure fabric in an embroidery hoop, tightly enough to have tension, but not so tight that you stretch the fabric.

Step 2: Embroider the design

Thread your needle, using as much or as little floss as you’d like. Embroider the design on the fabric, switching colors as needed.

Step 3: Add dowels for hanging

Fold over the top and bottom edges of the fabric and stitch across, leaving enough room for dowels on each end. Slide the dowels into the top and bottom openings.

Step 4: Hang on the wall

Tie baker’s twine on each side of the top dowel, and hang on the wall.

I loved making this project. And since the dowels slide in and out, you could easily make other embroideries, and switch them for any season or holiday!
