DIY Gold-Dipped Vintage Plates

Thanksgiving! It’s one week away! SEVEN days! It’s time get serious! So, today I’m going to show you a little project I did to make my Thanksgiving and Christmas tables extra special this year. After visiting my local thrift store and finding a few gorgeous vintage plates (I got 8 plates for $4.47!) I decided I wanted to give them a little bit of a modern twist. Here’s what I did:
Supplies:
-Ceramic Plates (I got mine at Goodwill)
-Glass Paint (I used Martha Stewart brand from Michaels. Note: These paints are non-toxic and meant for ceramic/glass but have not been declared food-grade safe. If you would like a paint that is food-grade safe, you can use a product such as Bella Paint for glass found here. Be sure to read to your labels to find the paint that is right for your project.)
-Paint Brush
-Painter’s Tape
-An oven
Instructions:
1. To give your plates the appearance of being dipped, tape off half or a quart of the plate using painter’s tape.
2. Paint! It took me 3-4 coats of paint to get the coverage I wanted. Let your coats dry to the touch in between each coat.
3. Once you have finished your last coat of paint, let them air dry for one hour and then bake in your oven according to your paint instructions. Bake times and temperatures will vary by brand.
4. Let plates cool completely in the oven.

I couldn’t be more thrilled with how my plates turned out and it was SO easy. I plan to use this set as decor and make a food-safe set for dinner. Since plate-thrift shopping is super affordable, the possibilities are endless!

IT’S COMING. The best food day of the year followed by the most wonderful time of the year! Get ready! Get plate-ing! And be sure to let us know if you make some plates of your own!
