DIY Halloween Costumes: DIY Artist Costume

If you’re looking for a fun, colorful dress-up idea for Halloween, this DIY Artist Costume is adorable, fun to make, and great for kids and adults!

DIY Halloween Costumes: DIY Artist Costume

We love a Halloween costume that feels mostly like what you normally wear (but with a twist) and this artist costume does just that! It’s also the perfect costume for all ages and is so simple to put together. Plus, this is a great one for kids to make since the DIY part requires no fancy skills–all they need is to be able to hold a paint brush.

How do you dress up like a painter?

To whip up this costume we wanted a bit of a Parisian vibe so we headed to Amazon and grabbed a striped shirt, red bandana, and a beret to get in character. Then we got to work on our apron, splattering it and brushing it so that it looked like it had been well-used by a color-loving artist! Lastly, we made the CUTEST paint palette that doubles as a candy holder. Here’s what you need to make your own:

Materials needed to make a DIY Artist Costume

Solid white canvas apron
Tie dye (we use Tulip One-Step)
Paint brushes
Disposable cups
Striped tee
Beret
Bandana
Cardboard
Scissors
Puffy paint
Ribbon
Paint brush

How to make a DIY Artist Costume

Make an Artist Apron

Step 1: Pour the powder from the tie dye bottles into disposable cups, one color per cup. Add about an inch of hot water to the cups and mix with a paint brush until the powder has completely disolved.

Step 2: On a dye-friendly surface, lay out the apron and use a paint brush to apply the dye to the apron using strokes and splatters.

Step 3: Let the dye set on the apron for at least 8 hours, then rinse the apron until the water runs clear and wash and dry the apron alone.

Make a Paint Palette Trick-or-Treat Bucket

Step 1: Cut two pieces of cardboard into the shape of a paint palette. Then cut a 3-4 inch wide strip of cardboard the length of about half the perimeter of the paint palette.

Step 2: Use hot glue to attach the cardboard strip between the paint palette pieces, along the bottom of the palette shape.

Step 3: Use puffy paint to paint 3D globs of paint on the front palette piece and allow to dry 24 hours.

Step 4: Attach a paint brush to the palette with hot glue.

Step 5: Poke two holes on the tops of each paint palette piece and thread ribbon through the holes, knotting the ends to create handles.

That’s it! You’re an artist! And now you also have a fun, colorful apron for using when Halloween is over and pie season begins!
