I love getting gift cards for Christmas and other holidays, but there is a definite stigma around gift card-giving – that they’re impersonal, not thoughtful, and maybe a little boring. I whole-heartedly disagree  because to me gift cards are the gift that keeps giving, allowing me to shop, while not spending my own money, and pick out something I’m sure to like, making the holiday last longer! But for those of you who feel a little like gifts cards are a cop out, I’ve got the perfect solution with these adorable DIY Gift Card Boxes! These checks all the boxes gift cards themselves are missing – since they’re handmade, they’re personal and thoughtful, and don’t forget that they can be used by the receiver long after the gift card has been spent! Keep reading to see how we made them!

Unfinished wood boxes (similar)
FolkArt Acrylic Paint
Patterned Paper (Crate Paper is our go-to)
Mod Podge
Paint brushes

How to make your own DIY Gift Card Box

Step 1: Remove the inside pieces of each box. Paint the inside and outside pieces different colors using FolkArt Acrylic Paint. We used Old Ivy, Sea Mist, Ballet Pink, Fire Coral, Yellow Ochre, and Burgundy. Let dry completely.

Step 2: Pair up the inside and outside box pieces.

Step 3: Select your paper and cut to fit the top of each box. Whenever we need patterned paper for a project, we use Crate Paper – they have the best patterns and colors and always takes our projects to the next level. The paper we used this time is from their Snowflake collection.

Step 4: Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of the paper and the top of the box. Lay the paper on top of the box and smooth it out. Let dry, then apply a sealing coat on top. Let dry.

Step 5: Embellish the boxes with tags (also from Crate Paper), and fill with tissue paper or Easter grass. Add your gift card, and you have officially made gift card-giving thoughtful and adorable!

Happy crafting (and gifting)!
xo, Sam
