In case you missed it, this year we have been working on a cape costume series for Halloween! (Find our flamingo cape costume here and our spooky spider cape costume here!) Capes are the perfect solution to this unusual year because if they don't get much action due to restrictions on the usual festivities, they can be adjusted to fit nearly anyone, and can be reused next year and the year after that! To give you an idea of what we mean, you'll see that in this post our cutie witch cape costume is being adorably modeled by a toddler, while early today, during the Halloween costume Studio 5 segment that we taped, we used the same costume to dress up a tween!
We love the versatility that cape costumes provide and they can be dressed up or down by what you choose to accessorize them with to make them extra special! Here is what you'll need to make your own:
Supplies needed to make a Witch Cape Costume
How to make a Witch Cape Costume
Step 1: Using scissors, cut your felt into a rectangle in your desired size (smaller for a kid costume, bigger for an adult costume).
Step 2: Add a tie to your cape. To do this, attach your black rope about a half-inch from the top on one of the shorter ends of the felt rectangle using hot glue. (Be sure to leave an even amount of rope on either end of the rectangle for tying.) Then, roll the felt down over the rope one or two times to conceal and apply some hot glue within the fold to secure.
Step 3: Attach the boa around the collar using hot glue.
Step 4: Using scissors or a craft cutter, cut out stars from your heat transfer vinyl. Then, apply them to the back of the cape with a hot, dry iron according to package directions.
Step 5: Paint your dowel black and let dry completely. While it is drying, cut two identical felt stars from your felt scraps. Place your dowel on one of the stars and secure with hot glue. Then, glue the other felt star on top of the glued star and dowel and secure with hot glue. If desired, add heat transfer stars on top of the felt starts.
Step 6: Accessorize with a witches hat, make up and fun leggings!
That's it! Isn't she the most spooky witch? We love how easy using felt makes this project. Since it doesn't fray there is no sewing required, plus it is warm and comfy! We can't wait to see this witchy girl out on the town on Halloween night!
