November 17, 2018 DIY Projects

This Needle Felted Heart Shoes tutorial was originally created for Consumer Crafts.

I'm a major shoe lover and a major craft lover, so today's DIY Needle Felted Heart Shoes are the perfect craft for me! This was the first time I had ever tried needle felting, and I loved everything about it – the process, the ease, and the final product. Keep scrolling for the tutorial!

How to make your own Needle Felted Heart Shoes

Step 1: Draw hearts on your shoes. I cut a heart out of vinyl and traced it to make the shape uniform.

Step 2: Fill in the heart. I was originally going to use red roving, which is why I used a red marker. Ideally, you would use the same color marker as the roving you intend to use. Filling in the heart helps hide any gaps in the needle felting.

Step 3: Cut or pull off some (about the same height as the heart) of the roving. Pull it a little to loosen it up. Arrange the roving on the heart to fit the shape. If you can only cover part of the heart at this point, that's okay. You can always add more later.

Step 4: Now to the fun part! Start poking the roving, forming it to the heart as you go. You will notice that the roving will start to get tighter as you keep going. Note that this process works best on softer fabrics. Since canvas is tougher, be careful as you poke because the needle can break. In fact, you might want to have a few spare needles on hand.

Step 5: Keep poking and poking and poking. Add any additional roving to fill the shape or any gaps.

Step 6: Once you are done poking, use scissors to clean up the edges or any extra fuzziness.

That's it! And now you have the cutest custom shoes you ever did see. And I always love a project that has lots of possibilities!

That is cute, but when I began gym classes in ancient days of 1968 in a new, consolidated Jr High School, my crafty Mom took a Sharpie & made beautiful monograms on the toes of my white tennis shoes. Then, she added black embroidery thread to insure those monograms would stay! Needless to say, the gym class girls were so envious! ❤️
