You know how, as of late, being called “Basic” is an insult? Like, if someone says you are basic it implies that maybe you have no real taste, opinions, thoughts, or interests besides those of the “basic” status quo? For instance, if you are a girl who, in September, can be seen walking in Ugg boots, holding a pumpkin spice beverage of some kind, posting on FB about how excited you are “Totes excited for This Is Us to start”, you might be basic?
I mean, in some ways I get it. There is nothing interesting about a society that only wants to watch Sex and the City reruns, listen to Taylor Swift, and thinks Chipotle is Mexican food, but being basic can't be all bad. Like, if all you want to wear are basics you're gonna look chic and timeless and being chic and timeless is anything but basic. Tossing on a fresh white tee, a patterned skirt and the best Mary Janes ever might be simple and even considered basic but it feels soooo right. Plus, Carrie Bradshaw was kind of an icon and I would snort pumpkin spice if it were widely accepted. Sometimes being basic can be the bomb.
