We are still working on filling up spaces in our apartment with art, and as a result, I am always on the hunt for something beautiful and unique to hang in my home. Just the other day I was walking by the most gorgeous home decor boutique and saw an amazing mixed media wall hanging with string and paint and all kinds of textures, and if it weren’t for the $700 price tag (NYC, you cray) it would be hanging in my home right now. Nevertheless, it did inspire me to think outside the box and start brainstorming other unique ways to create art with a little more texture! So, today I’m excited to show you the result of that inspiration — Paint Peel Art!
This paint peel art project is SO fun to make because of the unique method you use to create it, leaving you with a one-of-a-kind result (and all of that peeling is like free therapy for some reason. SO satisfying)! Plus, the colors you choose are really the superstars of the project, making this project endlessly adaptable for any season or style of decor. And, when it comes to paint color, I only use FolkArt® Acrylics from Plaid Crafts since the color variety is amazing and they are always so vibrant and gorgeous! Here is how you make it:
Supplies Needed for your Paint Peel Art:
FolkArt® Acrylics
FolkArt® Brushes
Wax Paper
Picture frame with backboard
Glue gun + sticks
- Unroll wax paper on a flat surface. Paint wax paper with a thick layer of FolkArt Acrylics Paint, about 6 inches wide. (I found that the thicker the layer, the easier it was to peel).
2. Let paint dry completely. While the paint is drying, paint the backboard of the picture frame white (not pictured). I found that I liked using the backboard of the frame instead of inserting another piece of paper/cardstock/posterboard into the frame because it gave more space between the glass and the art to really show the texture of the art.
3. Once the paint on your was paper is completely dry, begin to peel off pieces starting from the outer edge, working inward. Repeat this step with as many colors of paint as you would like in you project.
4. Arrange your paint peelings on the backboard then attach using your glue gun and sticks.
5. Once you have attached all of your peelings, attach the backboard to your frame and that’s it! You’ve made a unique, gorgeous piece of art that is full of color and texture!
Isn’t this paint peel art pretty? Using peeled paint makes this project so unique. It almost looks like rubber, plastic or even paper from some angles, and from other angles it looks like three-dimensional brush strokes! It’s gorgeous and I loved using a mix of matte and metallic FolkArt Acrylic Paint to add even more interest.
